The primary purpose of this study is to identify the spatiotemporal change patterns of heat islands in Sejong City, a planned new city. This research used Landsat 8 images and spatial autocorrelation to achieve this goal. The results of the analysis show that the temporal and spatial distribution patterns of heat islands in Sejong City have significantly changed since 2013. In particular, the proportion of building area was found to be the most crucial factor in determining the spatial distribution patterns of urban heat islands. Besides, heat islands in urban areas were confirmed to be considerably affected by vegetation density in urban parks. This study is very different from previous studies in that it uses both spatial autocorrelation and classification performance analysis to investigate the spatial and temporal change patterns of urban heat islands. However, this research has limitations in that it analyzes the spatiotemporal variations of heat islands only in Sejong City, which is a planned new city, despite its differentiation and usefulness. In particular, since the spatial structures of most of Korea's naturally formed cities differ from that of Sejong City, it may be a good research topic to compare the temporal and spatial patterns of heat islands in Sejong City and other cities
